CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Singer and activist Harry Belafonte is being honored at a ceremony in Massachusetts for his commitment to civil rights and humanitarian causes in the United States, South Africa and elsewhere.

Belafonte will receive the Desmond Tutu Social Justice Award on Saturday evening in Cambridge. Actor Danny Glover is also expected to attend the event that also celebrates the accomplishments of South Africa Partners, a Boston-based nonprofit dedicated to the development of partnerships that benefits the U.S. and South Africa.

Others expected to attend include Massachusetts first lady Diane Patrick and Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool who represents South Africa in the U.S.

The 85-year-old Belafonte worked closely with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and campaigned against apartheid racial discrimination in South Africa.

The New York City resident is the first artist to have a record that sold a million copies.
