Matthew McLaughlin, 28, of Lincoln, RI admitted he posed as police officer and threatened to kill the victim when he tried to steal her purse in the parking lot of an Olive Garden in South Attleboro last summer.

Rather than send him back to prison, the judge gave him a suspended sentence and probation, but ordered McLaughlin to apologize to the 23-year-old woman and her family.

McLaughlin, who admitted to having a drinking problem, has been in counseling and has a full-time job now.
