BOSTON (CBS) — When Bill Belichick drafted defense twice in the first round, he immediately raised expectations for both the defense as a whole and the young potential stars being drafted. Through one month of the NFL season, Chandler Jones has answered the challenge.
Jones was named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie on the Month on Thursday for his performance in his first four NFL games with the Patriots.
The 22-year-old has made 17 tackles with three sacks and two forced fumbles. In his first career NFL game, he sacked quarterback Jake Locker near the Tennessee goal line and stripped the ball, with fellow rookie linebacker Dont’a Hightower recovering the ball and running it in for a touchdown.
Jones’ three sacks lead the team in that category, with Rob Ninkovich recording 1.5 sacks, Jermaine Cunningham having one and Kyle Love getting credit for 0.5 sacks.
