Mass. Home Sales Up More Than 20 Percent In August

WALTHAM (AP) — Sales of single-family homes in Massachusetts were up more than 20 percent in August when compared to the same month a year ago.

The Massachusetts Association of Realtors reports Monday that last month was the 14th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases and just the second time since June 2010 that sales have exceeded 5,000 homes, the final month of a federal home buyer tax credit.

The Boston-based Warren Group, which tracks the market, reported that year-to-date sales are up 24 percent this year when compared to 2011.

Both organizations, which use slightly different figures in their calculations, reported that median prices were up slightly last month when compared to August 2011.

The Warren Group's CEO says sales figures confirm speculation that a housing market recovery is under way.
