MEDFORD (CBS) – Several people are facing charges after police say a Medford man attacked a woman with a weed whacker.
Robert Tiernan got into an argument with his neighbors on Monday around 5:30 p.m. when they asked him to stop using his weed whacker for a few minutes and he refused.
The neighbors say Tiernan began kicking dirt and swinging his weed whacker at them. Police say the weed whacker struck the woman in the arm and caused significant cuts and bruises.
At some point, the woman’s husband threw a beer bottle at Tiernan.
Tiernan claims the man threw the beer bottle first, and that it caused him to lose his balance and accidentally strike the woman with the weed whacker.
The other man told police he threw the bottle after Tiernan hit his wife, in an effort to get him to stop.
Police say someone at the woman’s house called 911 and that several men who were there chased Tiernan from the scene on Broadway over onto Bond Street.
Police officers showed up and found Tiernan bruised and beaten with no shirt on, and covered in blood.
Tiernan told officers one of the men punched him in the face and two others attacked him from behind.
The men who Tiernen accused told officers they were chasing him because they were afraid he would escape before police arrived.
They told officers that Tiernen attacked all of them while they were chasing him, and they were just defending themselves.
Tiernan was arrested and charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon after refusing a trip to the hospital for treatment.
Police say the man who threw the beer bottle at Tiernan will also be charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon.
The other two men involved in the incident face charges of Assault and Battery.
