BOSTON (CBS) – The 24th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk kicked off along the Boston Marathon route Sunday morning. It’s a one-day event that raises money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

A total of 9,000 people will walk up to 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston.

Sue Wheeler and her family are walking for 5-year-old Christian who just finished chemotherapy for his leukemia.

“We do it because our child is going to be cured,” says Sue. “There are lots of others that aren’t so lucky. We need to change those odds.”

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Kim Tunnicliffe reports

The head of the Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, Ann Beach, says finding a cure is the ultimate goal of everyone involved. They are hoping to raise $7.5 million from the walk.
