Vereen Out, Vollmer Questionable For Patriots' Season Opener Vs. Titans

BOSTON (CBS) -- Throughout much of the preseason, the big story line was who will win the battle for carries. For at least Week 1, Shane Vereen won't be a part of it.

The Patriots' second-year running back is listed as out for Sunday's season opener in Tennessee. He hadn't practiced all week due to a foot injury.

The injury report also lists five players as questionable -- tackle Sebastian Vollmer (back), cornerback Sterling Moore (knee), rookie cornerback Alfonzo Dennard (hamstring), tight end Daniel Fells (shin) and offensive lineman Nick McDonald (shoulder).

Safety Patrick Chung was listed as probable with a shoulder injury.

It's not the ideal start to the season for Vereen, who was selected 56th overall by the Patriots last year. He had just 15 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown in his rookie season, limited by a nagging hamstring injury.

Vereen suffered this foot injury in the Patriots' third preseason game.
