NORTH ATTLEBORO (CBS) – A month-old baby girl is in the hospital with brain injuries, at least six broken ribs, and several bruises; and police say a North Attleboro man is to blame.

Matthew Johnson, 22, was charged on Tuesday with assaulting Brae-Lyn Barbato.

Johnson had been babysitting the infant with his girlfriend earlier this month when the alleged incident took place.

He told police that he was holding the baby and tripped over a toy. However, investigators say the injuries are consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Barbato is being treated at a Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island, and is expected to survive.

The extent of her brain injury is not known.
