BOSTON (CBS) — Back in July, when Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury were set to join the Red Sox, Larry Lucchino emailed Red Sox season ticket holders to tell them to prepare for the “return of the varsity.”
On Aug. 21, to borrow a term from Lucchino, it’s the “return of the JV.”
Daniel Nava will join the Red Sox on Tuesday night, as Carl Crawford prepares for Tommy John surgery this week.
Nava, who was described in that email as having an “inspiring story,” played at a level a little higher than JV in his 65 games in the majors this season. He batted .251 with 17 doubles, four homers, a .770 OPS and 27 RBIs. In 29 games for Triple-A Pawtucket, he’s hit .313 with a .950 OPS.
The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo reported the move first via Twitter.
