Injured Ortiz Hopes To Return This Weekend

BOSTON (CBS) - David Ortiz is hoping to return to the Red Sox by the end of their home stand this week.

"You know how injuries are. You take your time, you heal and when you're ready to go, you're ready to go. I'm finally seeing the light when it comes down to my injury," Ortiz said on Sunday following Boston's 4-1 loss to the Yankees. "My injury has been a process of a six-week period. When I first got injured, I heard that and that's not what you want to hear at the time. You're thinking about 15 days at the most. But now that I'm seeing the result of feeling better; it's a six-week kind of thing."

Ortiz has missed the last month with an Achilles injury he suffered July 16. His recovery is entering it's sixth week, but Ortiz has yet to start running again -- which initially caused him discomfort two weeks ago. The Red Sox DH is hoping to resume his comeback this week, and return before Boston hits the road next Tuesday for a nine-game, West Coast road trip.

Ortiz was with the Sox for their recent 10-game road trip over the last week and a half, and said it was tough to watch his team go 4-6 over that stretch.

"It's difficult," he said. "Right now, we're in the last quarter of the season and we definitely want to be able to win some games. Hopefully, things are going to get better."

The Red Sox are 13-19 in the 32 games Ortiz has missed.
