Red Sox Receive Reliever Pedro Beato From Mets To Complete Shoppach Trade

BOSTON (CBS) - Red Sox fans can sleep easy now, knowing the team has received compensation for catcher Kelly Shoppach.

The New York Mets sent right-handed pitcher Pedro Beato to Boston on Thursday to complete the Shoppach deal.

Boston has assigned Beato to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Beato has 67 Major League games under his belt over the last two seasons, going 2-1 with a 4.67 ERA in 67 games. He has allowed 46 runs (37 earned) on 64 hits over 71.1 innings pitched while striking out 44.

The 25-year-old righty -- a 2006 first-round pick by the Baltimore Orioles -- spent most of July with the Mets. He had five scoreless outings in seven appearances, but allowed four runs over a third of an inning to close his tenure with the Mets. In all, he allowed five earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched in the Majors in 2012.

Shoppach has yet to play for the Mets.

To make room for Beato on the roster, the Red Sox transferred Scott Atchison to the 60-day disabled list.
