Report: Patriots Waive Dane Fletcher

BOSTON (CBS) – The New England Patriots have waived injured linebacker Dane Fletcher, according to a report by ESPNBoston’s Mike Reiss.

Fletcher injured his knee during New England’s preseason opener last Thursday.

While Fletcher is expected to be out for a long period of time, there is still a chance another team could put in a claim in hopes of him joining the team in 2013 — much like the Patriots claiming injured New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard. ┬áIf no team claims Fletcher, he would revert back to the team’s injured reserve list.

Fletcher was expected to play a big role as a backup linebacker for New England as well as a key player on special teams.

The team has also released receiver Britt Davis, who scored New England’s only touchdown in the 7-6 preseason opening win over the New Orleans Saints. Davis was also injured during the contest, suffering a shoulder bruise that would sideline him for 2-3 weeks.
