Report: Patriots Waive Dane Fletcher

BOSTON (CBS) - The New England Patriots have waived injured linebacker Dane Fletcher, according to a report by ESPNBoston's Mike Reiss.

Fletcher injured his knee during New England's preseason opener last Thursday.

While Fletcher is expected to be out for a long period of time, there is still a chance another team could put in a claim in hopes of him joining the team in 2013 -- much like the Patriots claiming injured New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard.  If no team claims Fletcher, he would revert back to the team's injured reserve list.

Fletcher was expected to play a big role as a backup linebacker for New England as well as a key player on special teams.

The team has also released receiver Britt Davis, who scored New England's only touchdown in the 7-6 preseason opening win over the New Orleans Saints. Davis was also injured during the contest, suffering a shoulder bruise that would sideline him for 2-3 weeks.
