New Bedford Clerk Fights Off Robbers With Stick

NEW BEDFORD (CBS) - A pair of would-be robbers got more than they bargained for when they tried to take down a convenience store in New Bedford.

Dramatic surveillance video shows one of the robbers jumping up on the counter demanding cash.

Owner Nicholas Dawoud would not give in and took on the robbers with a stick.

"I give him money, no I give money to my kids, I work for my kids," says Dawoud. "I work very hard. In ten years I have no days off, no vacation."

While the fight ensues, one of the robbers got away but Nicholas' wife locked the doors so the second one couldn't escape.

"I was scared because maybe he kill me or my husband," says Clotilde Dawoud.

This is not the first time Nicholas says he's been robbed.

Two armed men came into the store last month and threatened his wife with a knife. Nicholas said he gave them all the money he had.

That time, the robbers walked away with nearly $2,000, all of Nicholas' hard earned money he needs for his wife and three children.

That's why this time, he decided to fight back.

Nearby neighbors came and helped to subdue the robber until police arrived.

"My business, I have a lot taxes to pay," he says.

Police say they are still searching for the second suspect.
