BOSTON (CBS) – With MLB’s trade deadline approaching, the Boston Red Sox are shopping starting pitcher Josh Beckett, according to multiple reports
Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports is reporting the Red Sox placed calls to teams including Texas and Atlanta over the weekend to gauge their interest in the starter.
Passan is also reporting, according to a source, Boston would be willing to eat some of the $37.3 million left of Beckett’s contract over the next two-plus seasons.
Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal Tweeted Monday morning a source told him Boston talked to a “handful of teams” regarding Beckett, but a deal is “unlikely” at this time.
Beckett, who is scheduled to pitch Tuesday at Fenway Park against Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander, is 5-9 with a 4.57 ERA in 17 starts this season.
As a player with 10 years experience and five years with the same team, Beckett can veto any deal.
The MLB Trade deadline is Tuesday afternoon at 4 pm.
