Report: Still Sore, Ortiz Likely Won't Return Wednesday

BOSTON (CBS) - Although David Ortiz is eligible to come off the disabled list on Wednesday, it doesn't appear the Red Sox' DH will be rejoining the team at that point.

"This injury is just going back and forth so one day you feel one way and the next day you feel better," Ortiz said from Fenway Park on Monday. "These next three days we'll start doing different things. Hopefully everything goes well and I can come back and play."

Ortiz On Injury, Trade Deadline:

While in New York for Boston's three-game set with the Yankees over the weekend, Ortiz told ESPNdeportesLosAngeles.com he couldn't jog or bat before Sunday's series finale, and will not resume baseball activities until Tuesday.

Ortiz, on the DL with a strained right Achilles he suffered on July 16, felt concerned when he had a pain in his heel on Saturday. He had just taken batting practice for the first time on Friday after removing his protective boot earlier in the week.

The Sox' DH will continue to receive therapy for the injury, but there is no timetable for his return.

An optimistic outlook has him possibly returning for Boston's weekend series against the Twins at Fenway Park.

Ortiz is batting .316 with 23 homers -- both tops on the team -- and 58 RBI for Boston this season.
