NEW BEDFORD (CBS) – New Bedford police have recovered a police-issued assault rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition that was stolen out of the trunk of an unmarked cruiser about two weeks ago.
The car, according to New Bedford Police Chief David A. Provencher, had been parked in the driveway of an officer’s home at the time of the theft.
Police say on Thursday night Fairhaven and Acushnet Police received information about a rifle being moved about in the streets.
This led to a search of a wooded area on Pembroke Avenue in Acushnet.
Police eventually found the rifle was wrapped in a canvas bag and slightly buried. All the rounds that were stolen with the rifle were also accounted for.
