Exclusive: Search To Be Launched For Woburn Girl Missing Since 1989

By Karen Anderson, WBZ-TV

STONEHAM (CBS) – A new search is being launched in Stoneham for a Woburn teenager who went missing nearly 23 years ago.

Melanie Melanson was last seen alive in October 1989, just five days before her 15th birthday.

The Woburn High School freshman had been at a party in the woods with a group of friends and classmates and never came home.

Last November, volunteers with cadaver sniffing dogs searched several wooded areas in Woburn.

The dog teams detected hits positive for human decomposition in an area by some abandoned railroad tracks behind the McDonald’s off of Montvale Avenue.

The family sent the soil to be tested and had planned to dig there in August.

But their private investigator got a call from an anonymous source recently saying Melanson’s body may have been moved to an area in the Middlesex Fells Reservation in Stoneham.

On Saturday, ten volunteer cadaver dog teams from three states will search that area.

Melanson’s family said Melanie was last seen with two boys in the early morning hours.

Investigators are certain people know what happened to her. They’re hopeful that with the passing of time, someone will come forward to provide answers.

In 2009, the district attorney announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the discovery of her body.
