Giant Flag Stolen From Swampscott Returned

SWAMPSCOTT (CBS) – A huge American flag donated to the town of Swampscott has been returned, nearly a week after it was stolen.

The 20-by-30-foot American flag was taken from the town's World War I monument late last Wednesday or early Thursday.

It was donated by the family of Army Spc. Jared Raymond, a resident who was killed in Iraq in 2006.

It was found late Monday morning folded up on the steps of a church across the street from the monument.

Police still don't know who stole it.

They believe more than one person was involved because of its size.  To get to the flag down from the pole, the thieves had to cross three feet of shoulder-height shrubs and then scale the monument.

The flag cost Raymond's family about $1,000.
