SAUGUS (CBS) – No charges are expected in the death of a 2-year-old girl Sunday in Saugus, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office.

The girl died after she hit the ground in what authorities called a “tragic accident.”

“The person that was holding the child may have reached into the motor vehicle in order to start the motor vehicle to turn the AC on. The vehicle may have lurched forward, causing the person holding the vehicle to lose their balance and to accidentally drop the child, causing severe trauma to her head,” said Saugus Assistant Cheif of Police Leonard Campenello.

The vehicle uses manual transmission.

“Any contact with the motor vehicle by the child was incidental. The vehicle did not strike the child,” said Campenello.

The 2-year-old who died was from Peabody.
