The accident occurred near the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Essex Street.

The girl was taken to Mass. General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead before 3 p.m.

A witness told WBZ-TV that intersection can be dangerous.

"It was only a matter of time before something happened in this intersection," said Jeffrey Harmon, a witness. "People do speed around here."

Local and state authorities, along with the Essex County District Attorney's office, are investigating.

"This is an extreme tragedy for the family, and obviously it affects the entire community as well," said Assistant Chief Leonard Campanello of the Saugus Police Department.

No charges have been filed in the incident.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call police.
