Salem Police Lieutenant Accused of Rape

SALEM (CBS) - A Salem Police lieutenant is facing a rape charge.

Prosecutors say Lieutenant Matthew Desmond sexually assaulted a woman who was watching his children and some other kids as they used the pool at his home.

He is now on leave from the police force.

"The Salem Police Department takes any allegation against a member of the department very seriously," Salem Police Chief Paul Tucker said. "Lt. Desmond has been placed on administrative leave and the matter will now move forward in the court system."

Desmond is scheduled to appear in court on August 15, 2012.
