BOSTON (CBS) – Jacoby Ellsbury is back to playing baseball … at least in the Gulf Coast League. Still, it’s a start for the injured Red Sox outfielder.
Ellsbury went 1-for-4 for the rookie level Gulf Coast League Red Sox on Friday afternoon, his first game since suffering a shoulder subluxation on April 13.
As a designated hitter, Ellsbury doubled, walked, and struck out twice in five plate appearances against the Twins.
Friday’s game began a 20-day clock for Ellsbury and the Red Sox for his minor league rehab assignment, which barring any setbacks will expire on July18.
Fellow injured outfielder Carl Crawford also played in the game, his fourth with the GCL Sox. Crawford went 0-for-2 with two walks and a strikeout, playing left field.
Crawford is now 2-for-11 over his four rehab games with a double and three walks. His rehab schedule runs through July 12.
