Vandal Hits Crew Clear-Cutting Trees In Sudbury

SUDBURY (CBS) - All of the clear cutting by NStar has a lot of MetroWest residents in Sudbury, Framingham and Wayland fuming.

In fact some residents have became so irate at they're taking their anger out on the contracting company hired by NStar to remove the trees. Police are now searching for a man who wore a white hat and took an axe to a tree clearing machine, causing $5,000 in damages.

Marisa Lutz, whose side yard is now a barren wasteland says she does not condone violence but she has had some damaging thoughts about the machines.

"Yeah that truck sat in my backyard for a day and its tempting," says Lutz, "but that's not right that's not the solution."

A police detail now has to be on site while the men work for safety reasons. For the past month NStar has been clearing hundreds trees to prevent future power outages. In a statement NStar says:

"It's unfortunate that someone feels vandalism is appropriate in this situation. The safety of our customers, employees and contractors is paramount as we work to ensure that our transmission rights of way are clear of trees which can cause widespread power outages."
