Jacoby Ellsbury Likely To Begin Rehab Games This Weekend

BOSTON (CBS) -- While the Red Sox' mediocre record through 70-plus games of the season remains somewhat of a mystery, there's no doubt the team is desperately missing the contributions of center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury.

His road back to baseball is likely to begin this weekend, though, as Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Tuesday that Ellsbury could play his first rehab game on Friday night for the Gulf Coast Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla.

Ellsbury took batting practice at Fenway Park this week and according to several accounts looked to be healthy.

He suffered a shoulder subfluxation in April, just seven games into his season. Last year, he finished second in MVP voting after hitting .321 with 46 doubles, five triples, 32 home runs, 105 RBIs and 39 stolen bases.

Earlier, general manager Ben Cherington told SirusXM's "Inside Pitch" that he expects both Ellsbury and Carl Crawford back with the Red Sox by the All-Star break.
