Baby's Unsolved Death Gets Fresh Look From Needham Police

NEEDHAM (CBS) - An unsolved mystery in Needham is getting a fresh look from police and the Norfolk District Attorney's office. The discovery of a newborn baby in Claxton Field has been dormant since the discovery on Mother's Day in 1986. The baby was found in a trash barrel, its umbilical cord still attached.

Joe McGinty, a reporter with the Needham Channel News, says he spoke to Police Chief Philip Droney about revisiting the case.

McGinty tells WBZ NewsRadio, "There was evidence that was collected back at the time and that would now be subjected to modern forensic testing." He does not know any details about what that evidence was.

Officials say the baby was born alive and weighed four pounds, seven ounces. The discovery affected investigators so much that they named the newborn 'Fredericka Mary'. Needham Police are asking people to contact them if they have any information.
