Red Sox Holding Equipment Drive At Fenway Over Weekend

BOSTON (CBS) - As the Red Sox host the Atlanta Braves this weekend at Fenway Park, they are asking fans for some help.

The Red Sox, in partnership with the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, are hosting an equipment drive during their weekend series with the Braves, inviting fans to drop off new and used baseball and softball equipment outside of all Fenway Park gates.

Every fan who makes a donation will have the chance to win autographed memorabilia and other prizes.

The equipment will benefit the Massachusetts-based non-profit organization Kids Gear for Baseball, which distributes equipment to children in need.

Since it was founded in 2002, Kids Gear for Baseball has donated to more than 30 youth organizations, shelters, and missions. Recipients of equipment include organizations such as Boys and Girls Clubs of Lower Merrimack Valley, Worcester and Lawrence, Special Olympics, and Cross Roads for Kids.

Kids Gear for Baseball is now being managed by two Southborough friends: Trevor Ritchie and Russell McCarthy, both freshmen at St. John's High School in Shrewsbury.

In conjunction with the equipment drive, the Baseball Tomorrow Fund -- a joint initiative between Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association -- will award a grant of $5,000 to Kids Gear for Baseball for the purchase of new equipment.
