BOSTON (CBS) - For those looking to stay in Boston on the cheap, a new, larger hostel has opened up downtown.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Doug Cope reports.

For as little as $29 a night, travelers can stay at the 480-bed hostel on Stuart Street, right near Chinatown and the Theater District.

The new facility replaces a smaller 200-bed hostel that had been operating in the Fenway area of the city.

Deborah Ruhe of Hosteling International New England says there's definitely a market for a larger facility.

"In the past, in the summertime, we were renting a dormitory from BU, so we had extra capacity. So, we know in the summertime, as many as 500 people a night, young travelers, looking for inexpensive accommodations so they can visit Boston," said Ruhe.

The building is also the first certified "green" hostel in the country.

"We replaced all the windows. We put on a white roof. We put on green elevators that recapture energy when they go down. We have high-efficiency appliances. We have an o-zone washing machine," said Ruhe.
