BOSTON (CBS) — Dustin Pedroia’s apparent re-aggravation of his right thumb injury may not be serious, but it’s enough to keep the second baseman out of the Red Sox’ lineup on Wednesday night.
Pedroia won’t start for Boston on Wednesday, one day after he was taken out after the seventh inning. Pedroia appeared to have jammed his thumb on a pop-up against the Marlins’ Ryan Webb. Pedroia said that he did not re-injure his thumb and is only being held out for precautionary reasons. He’ll be available to pinch hit on Wednesday.
Pedroia missed a week at the end of May and beginning of June with an injury to the same thumb. Nick Punto will replace Pedroia at second base and bat ninth.
Pedroia is hitting just .170 since returning from that injury, though he had three hits (two doubles) in his last two games.
The complete Boston lineup is below.
1. Daniel Nava, LF
2. Ryan Kalish, CF
3. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
4. David Ortiz, DH
5. Cody Ross, RF
6. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
7. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
8. Mike Aviles, SS
9. Nick Punto, 2B
