Front Row Live Music Pick: The English Beat

BOSTON (CBS) - One of the best Ska revivalist groups ever, The English Beat (originally "The Beat") formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England. You may remember the band's massive smash hit, "Mirror In The Bathroom," a track that still sounds fresh.

The group created a unique sound by alternating lead vocals from punky toaster, Ranking Roger, and guitarist, Dave Wakeling. The English Beat were genius then and they will still blow you away.

The English Beat will play July 15, 2012 aboard the Provincetown II operated by Bay State Cruise Company.

I saw them just a few years ago downstairs at the Middle East and they are one of the best bands I have ever seen, right up there with Gang Of Four and The Cure. It will be an unforgettable experience to see this iconic band in the close quarters of a cruise ship. The only caveat with the show is that I cannot predict how the sound will be on board a vessel. Even with the potential sound issues, this is a show that should be at the top of your list.

The English Beat is not one of those groups who hastily reform to make a few bucks on a "swan song" tour. They are so tight and impressive that you remember why you used to go to rock shows and why you should revisit the habit.
