The US Open kicked off today at The Olympic Club in San Francisco and Michael Whitmer is on the West Coast covering all the action for the Boston Globe.

Whitmer joined 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher & Rich to discuss some of the interesting groups hitting the course together, 14-year-old Andy Zhang and how one covers an event like this.

This year Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson have been thrown into the same group and Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood round out another powerful group that will course together. Who chooses these grouping any why put these specific players together in the same groups?

The guys then discussed 14-year-old Andy Zhang who will become the youngest player ever to compete in a men’s US Open. What kind of golfer is he and what’s expected of him?
