Wasabi Attack Ends With Boyfriend Arrested, Girlfriend's $200 Jeans Ruined

Police said John McGuinness and his 21-year-old girlfriend were driving home from a local pub after watching the Celtics game when the girlfriend received a text message from a male friend.

The two then argued after McGuinness grew "enraged" over the text message, police said.

"They argued pretty much continuously all the way home after she received this text message," Barnstable Police Sgt. Sean Sweeney told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

The girlfriend then dropped McGuinness off at his Marstons Mills home and left the scene. She then turned around when McGuinness called her and said he was going to throw away her $200 jeans.

When she returned, she found McGuinness outside the home with her jeans, which were covered in wasabi sauce.

Police said McGuinness threw the jeans in his girlfriend's face, getting some of the sauce in her eyes.

"It must have been intense in the eyes. He then poured more sauce in her car, and that's when a physical confrontation actually took place," said Sgt. Sweeney.

At one point, McGuinness allegedly took her cell phone and later her car, parking it in the middle of the road.

"(He) left the door open and another car coming by in the opposite direction hit the door and slammed it closed," said Sgt. Sweeney.

The girlfriend eventually called police, who arrested McGuinness. He was arraigned on assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (the wasabi sauce), assault and battery/domestic violence and intimidation of a witness.

The girlfriend was not hurt. Police said she used a bottle of water to flush her eyes out.
