WELLFLEET (CBS) – Wellfleet Police confirmed that they captured a bear Monday night.

The black bear made its way onto Cape Cod over Memorial Day weekend, and was spotted in Provincetown last Wednesday.

The bear was not injured during the capture.

It’s likely this is the first bear that’s ever been seen on the Cape in modern times. Experts believe it swam across the Cape Cod Canal to get there.

In the last two weeks, the bear was spotted in Brewster, Barnstable, Dennis, and Yarmouthport.

He wandered at least 50 miles during his journey.

It’s unclear where wildlife officials are going to bring the bear.
