Twenty-five-year-old Kevin Carey told WBZ-TV he was driving along Wareham Street at David Road just before 8 p.m. when someone shot out his side window.

He lost control of the SUV and it went off the road and hit a tree.

"It's lucky I veered off to the right...what if I had gone left and hit an oncoming car?" Carey said.

Carey ended up with a broken hand.

Two holes were also found in the driver's side door.

"My grandkids could've been in a car coming the other way...or yours. Whoever did this needs to be taught a lesson," said Carey's father, Ken.

Investigators say projectiles were fired at the truck, but they are not calling them bullets.

"It appears that the vehicle was struck by what appears to be pellets from a pellet gun," Sgt. Marc Duphily told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Wednesday.

Officers searched the area for the shooter but didn't find anything.

Officers are now focusing their investigation into a housing development near the street where the shooting occurred.

Police are asking for the public's help in what they are calling a "most serious crime."

WBZ-TV's Bill Shields contributed to this report.
