BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Children’s Hospital is reporting a possible security breach after a staff member had a laptop stolen from a conference in Buenos Aires.
The hospital says it has notified patients who may have been affected by the potential breach.
Hospital officials say a file that had been emailed to the computer contained names, medical record numbers, birth dates, diagnoses, procedures surgery dates for 2159 patients.
No Social Security numbers were involved in the possible breach, according to the hospital.
“We deeply regret and apologize for any concern or inconvenience this situation may cause our patients and families,” the hospital’s Chief Information Officer Dr. Daniel J. Nigrin, said in a statement. “We take great measures to ensure that Protected Health Information is never inadvertently released, and we are undertaking additional steps to prevent breaches such as this in the future.”
