BOSTON (CBS) — It might never have happened had it not been for some untimely injuries, but when the Red Sox take the field Tuesday night, they’ll have Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Youkilis and Will Middlebrooks as part of the lineup.
Youkilis will return from the disabled list and start at first base, a position that he’s played very rarely since Gonzalez’s acquisition last year. The move back across the diamond is due to Middlebrooks’ success while manning the hot corner, and it’s made possible by Gonzalez’s ability to play a decent right field in a pinch.
Youkilis played at first base just six times last season, after establishing himself as a Gold Glove first baseman from 2006-10.
Gonzalez played right field twice over the weekend during interleague play in order for David Ortiz to remain in the lineup in a National League park. He did the same last year, though only for two games, but with six outfielders on the disabled list, the Gold Glove first baseman is willing to step in where the team needs him.
The full Red Sox lineup for Tuesday’s game in Baltimore is below.
1. Mike Aviles, SS
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Adrian Gonzalez, RF
5. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
6. Will Middlebrooks, 3B
7. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
8. Daniel Nava, LF
9. Marlon Byrd, CF
