PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island’s governor says former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling’s video game company has been less than forthcoming about its financial health.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee says Tuesday that “stonewalling” by 38 Studios has made it difficult for state officials to assess its viability.

Chafee’s remarks came during an appearance on former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci’s radio talk show on WPRO-AM.

38 Studios was lured to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in 2010 after receiving a $75 million loan guarantee from the state.

The company was more than two weeks late on a $1.1 million payment to the Economic Development Corp. State officials said last week they had been told by the company that it wouldn’t be able to make its payroll.

Chafee said Monday that 38 Studios laid off some employees.
