Roche: Time For Red Sox To Make A Statement

BOSTON (CBS) - The suddenly surging Red Sox open up a statement series Monday night in Baltimora against the first-place Orioles.

That's right, those Orioles. The same Orioles who put the 2011 Red Sox away on the last night if the regular season, and the same Orioles who swept the Sox earlier this season at Fenway.

So now, it's time for the Red Sox to make a statement.

How we look back on the "players only meeting" the team had a few weeks ago depends on how the Sox fare the rest of the way.

If they keep on winning, it will go down as possibly the turning point.

If they stumble, then it's not as big a deal.

However, give David Ortiz credit for basically saying "shut up and do your job."

The team needed to hear that. The starting pitchers, especially, needed to hear that.

A sense of urgency was needed. It appears to have arrived.

The Sox have won eight of their last 10 games, and if you've watched these 10 games you can see a change of attitude. They are battling their butts off.

Everyone has stepped up, and you can see that passion again.

Now they just need to continue that.

Starting Monday night.
