Cody Ross Suffers Broken Bone In Foot, Out Indefinitely

BOSTON (CBS) -- Cody Ross has been a pleasant surprise for the Boston Red Sox thus far this season, but he and the team received some unfortunate news on Monday.

The Sox' outfielder learned that he suffered a broken bone in his foot when he fouled a ball off himself on Friday night in Philadelphia. Bobby Valentine said Ross would be placed on the disabled list.

The injury is being compared to the same one suffered by Dustin Pedroia, which sidelined the second baseman for all but two games after June 25 during the 2010 season. It's not clear though how similar the two injuries are, so there's been no timetable given for Ross' absence.

Ross is hitting .271 with eight home runs, 28 RBIs and an .883 OPS this season.

Ross will join Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury, Darnell McDonald, Jason Repko and Ryan Kalish as Sox outfielders on the disabled list.

Che-Hsuan Lin will play in the outfield on Monday night, as Ryan Sweeney takes another day to recover from a potential concussion after he made a diving catch in Philadelphia on Saturday.
