Marlboro Police say Jorge Rivera was watching a friend's 6-year-old last Friday when the alleged assault occurred.

Officers said that Rivera got mad at the boy for talking back at him and then he choked the child before he poured hot sauce into the boy's mouth.

The boy was not seriously injured.

"I'm astonished. I just can't believe it," said Rivera's neighbor, who said she has known him for years.

The neighbor said Rivera used to work at a daycare center.

Rivera was ordered held on $1,000 bail on Monday after being arraigned on a number of charges, including assault and battery on a child.
