Prisoner Captured After Escaping From Custody In Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER (CBS) - Police captured a man Friday night who had escaped from custody in Bridgewater for about two hours.

David Meola of East Taunton managed to walk away as a Bristol County Sheriff van was transferring him to the prison's Alcohol & Substance Abuse Center. According to State Police, he was wearing civilian clothing and a waist chain.

State Police say he captured a Department of Corrections K-9 officer on the prison grounds behind a tower near the Old Colony Correctional facility.

State Police, K-9 units and a helicopter from the State Police Air Wing all assisted corrections officials in the search around the area of Route 18 in Bridgewater.

Meola was in custody due to a court order committing him for substance abuse. He no history of violence.

The Bristol County Sheriff is investigating the incident.
