Young Agawam Woman Accidentally Shot By Police

AGAWAM (CBS) - A 21-year-old woman was accidentally shot by a police officer early Saturday morning in Agawam.

Agawam police told our Springfield affiliate CBS-3 that the incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. at 238 Maple St., which is home to the Elizabeth Manor Apartments.

Police said officers were responding to the home for breaking and entering and a possible domestic dispute.

Hampden District Attorney Mark G. Mastroianni told The Springfield Republican that as officers were getting ready to enter the apartment, one of their guns discharged, hitting the woman inside.

Police said the woman suffered a "non-fatal" injury. She was taken to Baystate Medical Center.

The incident is under investigation.
