Youkilis Placed On Disabled List

BOSTON (CBS) -- When Kevin Youkilis showed up for spring training this year, his main goal was to stay healthy to help the team. One month into the season, that mission has already been sidetracked.

The Red Sox officially placed Youkilis on the disabled list on Wednesday, retroactive to Sunday, as the third baseman has been dealing with back soreness. The injury was expected to be minor, with Youkilis written into the original lineup Monday night, but he was a late scratch that evening and missed Tuesday's game as well.

Youkilis has played in 18 of the Red Sox' 23 games thus far, hitting just .219 with two home runs.

In his career, Youkilis has never played more than 147 games in a single season, averaging 133 games per year from 2006-11 and just 119 per game the past three years.
