NH Police: Man Poses As Teen Girl Online To Lure, Rob Another Man

SALEM, N.H. (CBS) - Police said a Haverhill man who posed as a 16-year-old girl online lured a 25-year-old man and robbed him in Salem, new Hampshire back in February.

John Ruth, 48, is accused of posing as the teen girl and soliciting the man to meet him on Feb. 12 at a parking lot on Ermer Road in Salem.

When the 25-year-old man arrived, Ruth, identifying himself as a federal agent with a sex crimes task force, allegedly blocked the 25-year-old with his car and ordered him out of his car.

Ruth then allegedly took the man's money clip and car keys, and after pretending to scan through his IDs and possessions, he handed them back and ordered him to leave.

The 25-year-old man later realized that Ruth took $146 in cash from his money clip.

Ruth later told investigators he was trying to apprehend sexual predators.

Ruth is under investigation for similar incidents in Massachusetts.

Ruth has been arraigned on charges including robbery, false personation and false imprisonment. He was ordered held on $20,000 bail.

The 25-year-old man, who is from Haverhill, is not facing charges at this time.
