Shaughnessy On Francona Skipping Fenway 100: 'He Is Still Unhappy'

BOSTON (CBS) -  They're planning a massive celebration one week from Friday as the Red Sox mark the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park opening.

Everyone who's anyone will be there.

Except the man who helped lead the team to its first World Series title in 86 years.

Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona was invited, but he said "no thanks."

Sports columnist Dan Shaughnessy, who spoke with Francona for an article in Wednesday's Globe,  told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Drew Moholland on Wednesday that Francona plans to skip the ceremony, thanks to bitter feelings stemming from his departure last October.

"I think he is still unhappy with stuff that came out. I think being let go was one thing, but then having a story in the Globe citing unnamed team sources getting into his personal issues, he doesn't feel right about that. He wants more explanation on that," Shaughnessy said.

Francona believes someone in the organization tried to hurt him and says he would feel hypocritical to be there hugging people on that day.

While he won't be around for the celebration next week, will Tito ever come back?

"He has to come back for his work. He's an ESPN analyst, he'll probably manage again, he'll be back then.  In terms of coming back for the hugs and the high-fives, he's pretty set on this and I'm not sure what they can do to make this right for him," Shaughnessy said.

But one thing is clear, this has nothing to do with the fans.

"I think the fans really love this guy and I think he loves the fans," said Shaughnessy.

"He won two championships and it's a shame the way it kind of ended. He said he felt he didn't have the backing over ownership on the last day and I think moving forward, he still feels that way."

"It's unfortunate, and that is something everyone has to move forward on. But I think there is a little bit of a gap there."

Shaughnessy told WBZ he is working on a book with Francona.
