Proposal Could Make Some New Bedford Illegal Immigrants "Good Residents"

NEW BEDFORD (CBS) - Illegal immigrants in New Bedford may soon get some protection from the city.

The New Bedford City Council is considering an ordinance that would allow illegal immigrants to register as "good residents."

They would have to submit their fingerprints and testimony proving they've lived in New Bedford for two years.

Supporters of the ordinance say that registration could help illegal immigrants bolster their case once they get to immigration court.
