Keller @ Large: Letter To A Dangerous Driver

BOSTON (CBS) - An open letter to the young guy – let's call him Tommy, no disrespect to the law-abiding Tommys in the audience – who put on such a dazzling display of reckless driving on my commute to work yesterday:

Listen to Jon's commentary:

Podcast

Dear Tommy,

Perhaps you didn't see me when you floored it out of a side street and into my travel lane yesterday.

That's hard to believe, because it was not a blind intersection, and you nearly clipped me, but it seems that you don't care too much about other drivers, or pedestrians.

I wonder if you'd even care of you killed someone, at least until a court made you care.

You had to be doing double the posted speed limit as you sped away in front of me, not that it did you much good, because I caught up with you a minute later at the four-way stop intersection.

By the way, let me explain how those work: people take turns, with the first car to reach the intersection going first, and so on.

You must not have known that, or cared, because you tailgated the guy in front of you and sped right through.

You floored it down the short, winding road to the next intersection, and I knew I'd catch up with you within seconds, as the traffic always backs up there.

All those fast starts and sudden stops must do a number on your tires, brakes and gas mileage!

After merging into the two-lane road through the stop, you tripled the speed limit and disappeared out of view before I again caught up with you, trying to cut across two lanes of traffic to merge.

By staying in my lane I somehow managed to wind up ahead of you at the next light, where I noted that you were dressed for work, and had no one in the car with you who needed to be rushed to the hospital.

This was, apparently, your normal commuting behavior.

So Tommy, let me close by saying: you need help.

You are a menace to yourself and others.

I hope you wake up before you hurt someone.

And to anyone else who sees their own behavior in Tommy's – I hope the same for you, too.
