Hudson, N.H. Schools To Donate "Pink Slime" Beef To Charity
HUDSON, N.H. (CBS) - The Hudson, New Hampshire school district will not serve any more "pink slime" beef to its students.
So, it will donate the meat instead.
"Pink slime" refers to Lean Finely Textured Beef (LFTB), which is an additive that may be used with ground beef as an inexpensive filler.
The debate over the use of pink slime has raged nationally for weeks, prompting a number of schools to pull meat possibly containing it from their lunch menus.
"While there has not been any documented evidence that ground beef containing LBT is a health risk, we are not willing to serve such ground beef to our students," the school district said in a statement Monday.
As a result, schools have a substantial amount of the meat.
They'll give the ground beef to "an eligible food bank or charitable organization," according to federal guidelines.
