Red Sox' Bailey To Get Second Opinion, May Need Surgery On Injured Thumb
BOSTON (CBS) -- It's looking less likely that new Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey will be ready to pitch when the team begins its season this week.
Bailey, who flew to Boston to have this injured thumb examined Monday, will now travel to Cleveland to seek a second opinion. WBZ-TV's Dan Roche has confirmed that Bailey will see Dr. Thomas Graham, as first reported by the Boston Globe's Peter Abraham.
Abraham also reported that sources indicate the news Monday was "not good" and that the righty may need surgery, though exact details are still unknown.
Manager Bobby Valentine did not divulge much information about Bailey, but the fact that Bailey needs a second opinion is an indication that perhaps the news in Boston was not positive.
If Bailey is not ready to start the season in Detroit this week, the Red Sox could turn to Mark Melancon, Alfredo Aceves or Vicente Padilla to fill the role in the interim.
