Fire Destroys Apartment Building In Haverhill

HAVERHILL (CBS) - Several people are homeless after a fire destroyed a two-story apartment building in Haverhill.

Flames broke out Saturday morning inside the two story building at 63 Pecker Street.

The Red Cross reported that it was responding to help the 16 people who were living in the multi-family home.

One of the fire victims says she only escaped with the clothes on her back.

"Neighbors are beautiful, took us in, gave us clothes. We're very grateful we're okay. My daughter's pregnant, she said.

The woman told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe she never heard any of the smoke detectors going off in the building.

"We would have died in our sleep," she said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Earlier in the week, residents reported a strong odor of gas inside the building. It is unclear whether that's related to the fire.
