MGM Abandons Plans For Casino In Brimfield

BOSTON (AP) — MGM Resorts says it is abandoning a plan to build a resort-style casino in the Massachusetts town of Brimfield, and will seek an alternative location in western Massachusetts.

The Las Vegas casino company indicated in a statement Tuesday that there were too many complications to pursuing the project in Brimfield.

The company, which owns several luxury casinos on the Las Vegas strip, announced in January that it had signed a contract with Rolling Hills Estates Realty Trust to purchase 150 acres of undeveloped land in the small community.

While the land is adjacent to the Massachusetts Turnpike, it has no direct access from the highway, a fact that posed a potentially major obstacle to construction.

MGM had said it would seek to build a new highway off-ramp leading to the casino.
